Louis Frere-Harvey is an Australian composer, percussionist and performer whose work explores the intersection of contemporary classical music, electronic sound and movement. Drawing on a background in percussion and electronic music, he creates works that combine rhythmic intensity with immersive sonic environments, spanning chamber music, orchestral performance, dance, theatre and interdisciplinary practice.
Before focusing on composition, Louis spent a decade touring internationally as the DJ and producer Command Q. The influence of electronic music continues to shape his compositional language, informing a practice that integrates acoustic instruments, electronics and an acute sensitivity to physical movement and embodied listening.
His work has been commissioned, developed and presented by leading Australian and international artists and companies, including Club Guy & Roni, Slagwerk Den Haag, Australasian Dance Collective, Queensland Ballet, Milwaukee Ballet, Brooke Leeder, Scott Elstermann, The Last Great Hunt, ROOKE Circus, Sally Richardson and Mitchell Harvey Company. His music has been performed throughout Australia, Europe and North America, including presentations at the Venice Biennale.
Louis is the recipient of the inaugural Minderoo Foundation Artist Fund and has undertaken creative residencies with STRUT Dance and TasDance. He received the Performing Arts WA Award for Outstanding Composition in 2022 and 2024.
His practice is driven by an interest in rhythm as a physical and social force, creating music that invites audiences to experience sound through movement, space and shared presence.
